Cultivating Resilience: The HUB’s Outdoor Space Reimagined

Last fall, we shared our vision to transform The HUB’s outdoor space into a vibrant, healing environment for young adults. Then, in the spring, that vision was challenged when the area was damaged by arson. What could have been a major setback became a powerful opportunity for growth—thanks to the generosity and dedication of our community.

We’re proud to share the progress that’s taken root:

Phase One: Building the Foundation

  • Midwest Walls & Landscaping donated labor to complete hardscaping, making garden beds accessible to all.

  • Lincoln Center Kiwanis Club constructed customized raised beds, assembled on-site at The HUB.

  • Jacob Korth, an Eagle Scout candidate, led the revitalization of benches, built a rain barrel stand, and helped construct raised beds.

What’s Next: A Pollinator-Friendly FutureThis fall, we’ll begin the next phase of transformation:

  • A bee lawn will be seeded with flowering plants like Dutch white clover and creeping thyme, in partnership with the City of Lincoln Watershed Management cost share program.

  • Trees and fruit bushes will be added to the perimeter.

  • Native plants and pollinators will be introduced with support from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum.

More Than a GardenThis space will serve as a hands-on classroom for young adults, offering lessons in nutrition, sustainability, and self-sufficiency. Produce from the garden will be used in cooking classes, helping participants build independent living skills. It will also be a peaceful retreat—encouraging mindfulness, goal-setting, and personal growth.

We’re deeply grateful to every partner, donor, and volunteer who helped bring this vision to life. Together, we’re cultivating more than plants—we’re growing resilience, independence, and community.

Progress!
